Thermal Dynamics (Nerds of Paradise)

Thermal Dynamics (Nerds of Paradise Book 5)Thermal Dynamics by Merry Farmer
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

This is a slightly different take on the Nerds of Paradise. In this one, Farmer takes on an unusual duo: an African-American female bulldozer of a lawyer and an Indian-American “nerd” who works at Paradise Space Flight. Sandy and Jogi are attracted to each other, but Sandy has no comprehension of how to have a relationship with a man since she believes she will lose herself as part of a couple.

Some ridiculous things happen, culminating in a bet that forces Jogi and Sandy into a dance contest. There is an HEA, and I commend Farmer for actually allowing her white characters (this is Wyoming) to show their antagonism towards people of color. That’s way more realistic.

He wants to dominate her senses—and her heart…

Love on the Line (Line #1)

Love on the Line (The Line, #1)Love on the Line by Kimberly Kincaid
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

First of the Line series. Violet Morgan is a private chef who has harbored a secret crush on her brother’s detective partner for years. Noah is a no-nonsense guy, not given to sentimentality. When he is shot in the line of duty, Violet goes to visit, even though she has sworn never to date a cop. When their dad was shot in the line of duty, Jason and Violet were changed forever by the tragedy. She doesn’t want to be involved – then the Police Department hires her to cook for and check on Noah while he is off duty “on a medical”.

The proximity causes issues and they begin to acknowledge their attraction. Violet doesn’t want to yield, so she runs away. When something happens, she runs right back, though.

Worth the Wait

Worth the Wait (McKinney/Walker, #1)Worth the Wait by Claudia Connor
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

A true second chance story, spinning off from the McKinney brothers series. Nick Walker is the oldest brother of Hannah, Stephen McKinney’s wife (see Worth the Risk). Taking up their story from the early years, you see what made Nick who he is, and the single-minded determination that lost him Mia, his first and only love.

The story is sad and emotional for Nick, Mia, and Hannah, too, since she is the central focus for all the action in the story. A lot of McKinneys are involved, since the centerpiece of the latter part of the book is Hannah and Stephen’s wedding. Nick and Mia are not forgotten, though. Their story takes years to come to fruition. This is another well-written story and it is “worth the read!”

Dog Tags for Christmas

Dog Tags for ChristmasDog Tags for Christmas by Lindsay McKenna
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Three good novellas about dogs and Christmas. McKenna’s story is about a vet with PTSD, his dog and the young woman he meets who works for an elder charity through Delos. Snowflake is an Australian shepherd, who became Nick’s service dog after he lost his original MWD. Holly McGuire works for Delos and meets Nick at his mother’s diner where she takes the leftover food to her elder clients. They see a Lab running away one day, and the story of the love growing between Nick and Holly and the love of the two of them for Lady the Lab, as they try to gentle her enough to get her to come in from the cold, is a sweet one.

SEAL’s Christmas Dream is about Joe and Willow Flynn from Lost and Found Investigative in Denver. When Willow takes in a badly maltreated dog, she and Joe recognize the signs of dog fighting. A young man with a scrawny dog is helped and then comes to them when his dog is in the same condition. He begins to open up to them, and they find each other for the holiday.

Noel’s Puppy Power is the story of an army vet who trains dogs for former servicemen who need service dogs. He works with a psychologist who is beautiful, skilled and an amputee veteran. They find each other attractive, but Tanner thinks she is out of his league. Noel is the only female pup in a litter of five that Bailey helps deliver. All of the pups are being bred as service dogs. Bailey is also training for the Paralympics, so even though she and Tanner find each other attractive, they can’t find time in their schedules for an actual date.
They finally make it work and Noel is the happy puppy prize.

Deceiving Bella-Bodyguards of LA

Deceiving Bella (The Bodyguards Of L.A. County, #11)Deceiving Bella by Cate Beauman
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I’ve deducted a star from this review because of the length of this story. I understand that the twists and turns had to happen, but it took a little too long! However, I liked this one. Reed and Bella needed to meet each other and needed each other to heal. Reed is a former NYPD detective who spent too long undercover, and Bella Colby is a young woman who lived in a happy home for a short time and a very unhappy one later on. She’s not let it turn her hard or cynical, while Reed has armored himself against any emotion.

Buried in all of the emotion is a pretty good mob-chase story, and the fact that one-half of this duo is engaged in behavior that makes the other convinced of a totally wrong idea – wait, that actually applies to both of them. There is deception done from love here, and it happens more than once.

It takes a long time to arrive at their HEA, but they do.

Vortex (SAI #1)

Vortex (SAI Book 1)Vortex by Lea Hart
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Another adventure with the DuMond Family. The oldest sister, Vivi, is a doctor who runs a free clinic in one of New Orleans’ poorest neighborhoods, Algiers. They have been robbed and threatened, and lately, bodies have been left inside their clinic.

Ronnie asks the Miami office of SAI to help and protect the three powerhouse women who run and staff the clinic. Joel, who heads the office, goes down reluctantly because he does not get along with Vivi. There is a reason for that, as will soon be seen. Turns out both of them have things in their past that they need to overcome.

The story becomes a crime story, a love story, and oh, so many other things. I have to commend Ms. Hart on the dialogue in this one, particularly between Vivi and Joel. It is hilarious.
