Say You'll Stay (To Serve and Protect #2)Say You’ll Stay by Kathryn Shay
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Gabe, oldest of the Marino brothers, was removed from his protection detail responsibilities after a scandal at the Secret Service. He has worked at the Training Facility since that embarrassment, bringing new agents along.

He has the opportunity to move back to Protection when his brother Nick opts to be closer to his family. Nick is asked to form a new task force on police training. He asks for, and receives, permission to co-head the TF with Gabe. Meanwhile, Gabe has realized that he is in love with the widow of another agent, who is wary of him. First, she struggles with her son who is emotionally fragile. Also, her husband was killed while on protection detail and she doesn’t ever want to go through that pain again.

Gabe is very good with Simon and he cares for the fragile child a lot. Some of you familiar with Shay’s work can probably figure what could go wrong here, but I’ll let you figure it out. There is an HEA and a lot of things have to happen in order to make it come true. I like the way that the author brings the Marino parents into these books, and shows the toll the dangerous work takes on the parents, as well as the children.

Some old friends also make an appearance at the Secret Service Training Facility, and it’s good to hear from them. Well done second entry to the series.

Special Forces: Operation Alpha: HACKED (Kindle Worlds Novella)Special Forces: Operation Alpha: HACKED by Sue Coletta
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

The author provided me with an ARC for my unbiased, honest opinion. This is a fast-paced thriller set in the world of white-hat hackers, as well as in Susan Stoker’s SEAL of Protection world. This means that they hack for good, kind of like Robin Hood. The female lead here, Shawn, is a white-hat who has been punished by her small-town police department employer for publishing photos of the police chief in a compromising position.

You gather that he is a creep but nevertheless, she has been sent to punishment camp in Pittsburgh where two gentlemen walk into the conference room. One of those is a detective who hates Shawn because of a past interaction, and one is Tex (John Keegan), SEAL and member of Wolf’s team. Tex has a real world problem for the team and most of the hackers in the room immediately question what they are doing. Shawn does not, but immediately gets to work. Tex realizes who she is and begins to work with her. It seems that certain cars and SUV’s with onboard computers are being hacked, and Tex and Detective Odin (great name, BTW) are tasked with finding the hacker as quickly as possible. People are dying and the powers that be want to keep it quiet before there is a country-wide panic.

I was not a fan of Shawn’s methods, but the problem is solved in a heartbreaking way. I want to know more about the handsome detective who is in love with Shawn (kudos to Coletta for this breakthrough) and also about her best friend and the cheating fiance. Please write another!

Alone Before You (Before You, #1)Alone Before You by Claire Scott
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I received a copy of this book for an honest review. This is not first of a trilogy, but the first part of a three-part serial. I’m generally not a fan of serials, unless all parts are available in a set at the same time.

The beginning of this story is chilling, showing you how the female protagonist grew up. She is mistreated and abused and somehow emerges alive. However, she is not intact. She is mistrustful and detached, friendless and solitary. She arrives in a new town, ready to continue her solitude. The younger folks in the town befriend her, and she slowly begins to thaw.

Her character is well-drawn, and her new friend Heather is also interesting. The men, Gabe and Colt, may need a little more development and I feel that they will play a large role in the inevitable showdown with Gwen’s past.

Clues of the Heart (Baytown Boys)

Clues of the Heart: Baytown Boys SeriesClues of the Heart: Baytown Boys Series by Maryann Jordan

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Not bad entry in the Baytown Boys series. This one is about one of the Baytown Girls, Katelyn McFarlane, who grew up in Baytown, and the private investigator Gareth Harrison, the new man in town. Katelyn has been stuck for years since her childhood sweetheart was killed in Afghanistan.

Gareth challenges her to begin living again, and to maintain her memories while creating new ones. Oh, by the way, Jordan crafts a nice little mystery along the way, giving the PI and his new assistant something to sink their teeth into.

The small town’s everyday doings are a large part of this series, and you can see how much the author appreciates those little things – Pirate Days, the American Legion, small town shops, and businesses.

Good one.

King of Clubs (Aces & Eights)

King of Clubs (Aces & Eights #2)King of Clubs by Sandra Owens
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Second of the Gentry brothers to find love, Court has to travel a long road. Lauren and Court met six years earlier when they essentially fell in love at first sight while she was playing beach volleyball with friends.

She called him and cut their relationship off without an explanation. He has never been able to trust another woman. She had a good reason to do this, or so she thought. They have to meet each other at least halfway top get over their issues. There is also considerable danger from the Bratva, which is the reason Lauren left Court originally – to protect him from them.

The Gentry brothers are too tough for that, though.

Thermal Dynamics (Nerds of Paradise)

Thermal Dynamics (Nerds of Paradise Book 5)Thermal Dynamics by Merry Farmer
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

This is a slightly different take on the Nerds of Paradise. In this one, Farmer takes on an unusual duo: an African-American female bulldozer of a lawyer and an Indian-American “nerd” who works at Paradise Space Flight. Sandy and Jogi are attracted to each other, but Sandy has no comprehension of how to have a relationship with a man since she believes she will lose herself as part of a couple.

Some ridiculous things happen, culminating in a bet that forces Jogi and Sandy into a dance contest. There is an HEA, and I commend Farmer for actually allowing her white characters (this is Wyoming) to show their antagonism towards people of color. That’s way more realistic.
